The Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has given the management of Bukuru Market, especially the Hamaz section, a 24-hour ultimatum to identify and hand over those who attacked its staff during a routine sanitation exercise.
The Director General of PEPSA, Hon. Samuel Dapiya, expressed disappointment during an emergency meeting with market leaders. He said the agency has always worked peacefully with market stakeholders but is concerned that staff are being attacked while carrying out their duties. He warned that if the culprits are not produced within 24 hours, the market will be sealed, using the agency’s legal powers.
Responding, the Chairman of the Jos South Local Government Market Association, Saidu Gambo, said the attackers are not registered members of the association. He requested more time to consult with traders to help identify those responsible.
The ultimatum is part of PEPSA’s wider efforts to keep Plateau State clean. The agency recently began its annual sanitation activities with a large-scale refuse evacuation in Jos South, alongside public awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal.
Meanwhile, the leadership of Kugiya Market has been directed to work with the Department of Waste Management to remove refuse dumped near the market.
PEPSA reaffirmed its commitment to public health and the “polluter pays” principle, urging residents to support efforts to keep the state clean.
