The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED) received a delegation from the Anguwan Miyango and Bwandan communities of Bukuru on Monday regarding the ₦10,000 monthly deduction from customers’ postpaid accounts.
The community representatives submitted a formal letter appealing for the removal of the charge. They explained that electricity consumption in the area has dropped by nearly 30% since the introduction of prepaid meters.
According to them, the current monthly payments by residents are almost five times higher than their previous electricity bills due to the high cost of electricity units (kilowatt per hour). They said this situation has placed a serious financial burden on many households.
The delegation also stated that many residents in Bukuru are struggling to afford basic necessities, and more than half of the community is currently living without electricity because of the new billing system.
Despite the appeal, the communities say no official response or announcement has been made by JED five days after the letter was submitted.
The residents are therefore urging the electricity provider to reconsider the charges in order to ease the financial pressure on the community.
