The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has presented brand-new Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to first-class traditional rulers in the state as part of efforts to strengthen traditional institutions and support community leadership.
The presentation ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Old Government House Rayfield in Jos, as part of activities marking the governor’s 61st birthday.
Governor Mutfwang said the gesture reflects his administration’s respect for the traditional institution, noting that traditional rulers remain an important part of the leadership structure in society. According to him, the vehicles were presented as his personal birthday gift to members of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs.
He explained that the initiative was carried out in collaboration with the 17 Local Government Councils in the state to improve the mobility and comfort of the royal fathers, enabling them to effectively discharge their responsibilities in their communities.
The governor added that the distribution of the vehicles represents the first phase of a broader effort aimed at improving the welfare of traditional rulers across all categories in the state. He also disclosed that plans have been concluded to establish a maintenance facility for the vehicles at the Butex Mechanical Workshop, which the government intends to revive for proper servicing.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ephraim Usman, said the presentation demonstrates the administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions for more effective service delivery.
He revealed that the government has made progress in resolving several long-standing chieftaincy issues across the state, noting that many vacant traditional stools that had remained unresolved for decades have now been filled. He added that more than 200 district and village heads have also been selected with minimal litigation.
In his goodwill message, the Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, commended the governor for recognising the role of traditional institutions and appealed for continued support to improve the welfare of traditional rulers.

He also called on communities with vacant traditional stools to speed up the process of filling them and urged stakeholders to address prolonged litigation surrounding chieftaincy matters, which he said often slows down community development.
During the event, members of the State Executive Council, political associates and well-wishers also celebrated the governor on his 61st birthday.
Among dignitaries present were the Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Ngo Josephine Piyo; the Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau; the Chief of Staff, Government House Jos, Jeremiah Satmark; and the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in the state, Rufus Bature, alongside other government officials and stakeholders.
