Nine members of the Nigerian Senate have formally notified the upper legislative chamber of their defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from different political parties.
Among those who defected from the Labour Party are Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye and Ireti Kingibe.
Five other senators — Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Binos Yaroe, Lawal Adamu Usman, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo and Augustine Akobundu — also resigned their membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ADC.
Similarly, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who was the only senator representing the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Senate, also announced his defection to the ADC.

However, the Senate has asked Senator Abaribe to reconsider his decision within one week, noting that his explanation that he left APGA because he was sacked by the party does not meet the constitutional requirements for defection.
The development marks a significant political shift in the Senate as the ADC continues to attract lawmakers from other political parties.
