The Bauchi State chapter of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has condemned the alleged assault on a journalist with Albarka Radio, Mohammed Adamu, by police officers during the Eid Durbar celebration in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the State Chairman, Hon. Abdurrahman Yusuf Muazu, the party described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable.
The PRP alleged that the journalist was attacked by officers led by the Divisional Police Officer, Jamilu Kabir, resulting in serious head injuries.
According to the party, the incident highlights the growing threats faced by media practitioners, stressing that journalists should not be subjected to violence while carrying out their duties.
The statement called on relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The party also urged security agencies to respect the role of journalists in promoting accountability, transparency and democratic governance.
Reaffirming the importance of press freedom, the PRP stressed that the safety of journalists remains essential to sustaining democracy and called for collective efforts to protect media professionals from harassment and intimidation.
