An aid to the Governor of Plateau State, Gyang Bere PhD has caught the vision of his principal’s commitment towards youth empowerment and peaceful coexistence.
Bere, who serves as the Director of Press and Public Affairs (DOPA) to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State saw the need to put back to his immediate community, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State by organizing a peace and unity football tournament as a way of fostering unity and peace as well as discovering and encouraging talents in sports.
The 2025 Vwang Peace and Unity football tournament sponsored by Gyang Bere PhD came to a close yesterday Sunday 11th January 2026 with a grand finale at the Vwang football field.
The finals of the tournament which drew mammoth crowd is said to be a second edition of the competition having Turu United football club of Vwang emerging as champions defeating their opponents Vwang Central FC by a lone goal (1-0 )in the 59th minute of the second half to claim the trophy.
With this victory,Turu United FC maintain their dominance as the defending champions having won the first edition.
Grassroots Watch magazine reports that the tournament spearheaded by Dr. Gyang Bere, the Director of press and public affairs to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, adjudged to be a viable platform for discovering and exposing young talents.
The multiple positive effect of tournament is evidently clear because over the years, the tournament has produced outstanding players who are currently featuring in reputable football clubs within and outside Nigeria, and the unity it brings amongst not just the youths but the entire communities within the district.
Speaking during the grand finale encounter, Dr. Gyang Bere confirmed that the initiative aims to engage youths on profitable venture for peace and sustainable development in tandem with Governor Mutfwang’s administration driven philosophy.
He said the governor has continued demonstrating unwavering commitment towards investing in the youths in different platforms to excel and become responsible community leaders.
“The tournament was conceived to bring together talented youths across Vwang District, promote peace, unity, and social cohesion, while also championing the fight against drug abuse within the community and beyond”, Bere stated.
He also acknowledged the unflinching support and contributions of his principal Governor Caleb Mutfwang,the Plateau State Football Association (PFA) management, ministry of youths and sports development,traditional rulers and stakeholders of Vwang District as well as the general public for their unwavering commitment to peace, unity, youth development, and communal harmony.
Some of the dignitaries present at the epoch making grand finale of the tournament are; Da Gyang Dudu, president of Berom Education and Cultural Organisation (BECO), Hon. Silas Patrick Dung, Chairman Jos South LGA, Dr. Jim Wayes, Chairman Plateau State Board of Internal Revenue Service, former chairman of Jos South LGA, Hon. Peter Vwang Dung, personal physician to the Governor, Dr Meshach, the ADC to the Governor, the personal assistant to the Governor, NUJ Chairman Comrade Ayuku Pwaspo and myriad of Journalists, to mention a few.
