The Bauchi State Government has commissioned a new public health laboratory at the State Primary Health Care Board, as part of efforts to strengthen healthcare service delivery and disease surveillance across the state.

The facility is expected to enhance diagnostic capacity, improve patient care, and support effective response to public health challenges.
Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dauda Yakubu Mahmoud, who represented the Commissioner for Health, described the laboratory as a major milestone in improving the state’s healthcare system.

He said the facility is not just a structure but a symbol of government’s commitment to strengthening public health, improving disease surveillance, and equipping healthcare workers with modern tools.

According to him, the laboratory is fitted with advanced technology for rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases and will serve as a hub for public health monitoring, research, and capacity building.

Mahmoud added that the initiative aligns with the government’s goal of achieving universal health coverage and ensuring access to quality healthcare services.
He commended Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for sustained investment in the health sector, as well as development partners for their support.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr Rilwanu Muhammad, said the laboratory has commenced operations and will play a key role in screening and controlling public health risks.
He explained that the facility will be used to screen food vendors, water producers, and other public service providers to ensure safety standards are maintained.
Dr Rilwanu noted that the laboratory will conduct basic tests for diseases such as typhoid and hepatitis, while also supporting outbreak investigations before samples are referred for advanced testing.
He further called for collaboration with agencies such as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control NCDC to enhance the state’s testing capacity.
He reaffirmed the board’s commitment to preventing disease outbreaks and improving overall health outcomes for residents of Bauchi State.
