A Bauchi-based politician, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmad, has said that major political parties in Nigeria are currently grappling with internal challenges, warning against any move toward a one-party system.

Ahmad stated this in Bauchi during an interview with journalists, where he identified the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as parties facing varying degrees of internal issues.
He noted that while the PDP is dealing with national and state-level disputes, including factional concerns in Bauchi State, the ruling APC is still contending with the aftermath of its congresses.
According to him, although the ADC also has internal differences, they are less severe compared to those of the APC and PDP, expressing optimism that such challenges could be resolved.
Speaking on the political landscape, Ahmad warned that attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state would be dangerous and unrealistic given the country’s diverse nature.
He stressed that Nigeria’s multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multicultural composition makes it unsuitable for a single-party system, urging citizens to resist such a development.
Ahmad also raised concerns over what he described as selective prosecution of politicians, alleging that individuals outside the ruling party are often targeted, while those within it are shielded.
On the situation within the ADC, he dismissed claims of factionalisation, describing the issues as mere political differences that could be amicably resolved.
He maintained that the party leadership under David Mark remains legitimate, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had recognised the leadership.

Ahmad further expressed confidence in the prospects of the ADC, citing growing membership and participation in its ongoing registration exercise, particularly in Bauchi State.
He, however, ruled out contesting for any political office for now, stating that he would rather support credible candidates capable of delivering good governance.
The politician called on Nigerians to work collectively toward strengthening democracy and ensuring fairness across all political parties.
