Management of Albarka Radio 97.5 FM, Bauchi, has condemned in strong terms the alleged assault on one of its reporters by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bununu and his men during the Sallah celebration in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
In a press release issued on Monday and signed by the General Manager, Dauda Mohammed Ciroma, the station described the incident as vicious, unprovoked and a violation of press freedom.
The management said the attack on a journalist carrying out his lawful duty represents a threat to democracy and undermines constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of the press.
Albarka Radio aligned itself with the position of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), expressing confidence in the union’s leadership to ensure that justice is served.
The station also acknowledged the statement by the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, who condemned the incident and promised an investigation.
It, however, called for the immediate suspension of the DPO involved pending the outcome of the investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.
Albarka Radio further appreciated individuals, civil society organisations and media stakeholders for their solidarity and support, noting that such collective action reinforces the demand for justice.
While acknowledging the existing cordial relationship with the Bauchi State Police Command, the management stressed that the conduct of the officers involved does not reflect the values of the entire force, but insisted that those found culpable must face the full weight of the law.
The station warned that failure to act decisively would raise concerns about the commitment of the command to protecting journalists and upholding the rule of law.
