The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has taken decisive action against unhygienic abattoir practices in Jos North Local Government Area. During a recent inspection, the Director-General, Mr. Samuel Nathaniel, ordered the immediate suspension of operations at the Filin-Ball and Gadan Ganda abattoirs due to significant public health risks associated with the unhygienic conditions.
The inspection revealed that the abattoirs lacked basic infrastructure, including clean water, proper waste disposal systems, and adequate ventilation. Poor waste management practices were also found to be contaminating surface and groundwater quality.
PEPSA is committed to protecting the health and well-being of the people of Plateau State. The operation of illegal abattoirs will not be tolerated, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that all abattoirs in the state comply with the required standards, said Mr. Nathaniel.
PEPSA has called for a meeting with the leadership of the abattoir to discuss measures to address the issue, including arrangements for relocation to the Jos main Abattoir. The agency urges the public to support its efforts in ensuring that meat sold in the state is safe for consumption.
PEPSA is committed to working with all stakeholders to address the issue of unhygienic abattoir practices and promote a healthy environment for all.
